We love it when others agree there are no short cuts. Three cheers for hard work and deep learning. http://t.co/hadCMNXmFG

Computers Block Students from Learning?

A global research study examines the impact of computer access on learning. The results show students who have more computer time in and out of school do no better or even worse when tested in math and reading.
The researchers go on to suggest that teachers have not figured out effective ways to to integrate technology into classrooms.

We would like to add that, at this point computers are a distraction to learning because they take away valuable practice time for students. We know there are no short cuts to learning, and kids need to spend time recognizing and practicing patterns they will be tested on and that will help them succeed as 21st Century citizens.

Why do we have to learn this?

Here's why algebra!

Research on Metacognitive Strategies

Want Your kids to Do Better in Math? Have Them Trace Math Problems With A Finger.  We love metacognitive strategies for all learners. This research shows how student who trace math problems do better in math. http://bit.ly/1NODHm0

No Two AlgebraCARDS are alike.

We've said it before, special ed teachers are the pioneers of educational methodology. Learners with Dyslexia benefit from strategies like "physically organizing objects, naming the action, and writing the process down."
We designed each AlgebraCARD so it is unique. This organization, along with color coding and boxing important or related concepts, gives learners another advantage in recalling abstract and similar concepts.
Chris Woodin works with The Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity and he wrote this piece called "
Demystifying Math Struggles & Identifying Strategies to Help".

The Power of Listening While Reading

PictureHave a look in our store.
Many researchers have shown the benefits of listening to someone reading.  From reading to a baby in the womb to listening centers in schools to reading to pets in a shelter to the bedridden and to the elderly.
And many researchers have shown that following along in a text while another reads has been a magic bullet to learning new content. This article is one of those many. Check it out and then check out our podcast page while you follow along with AlgebraCARDS.

We are constantly on the look out for research that shows best practices in algebra and math, learning, listening, and teaching.
Maybe just to answer that age old question, "Why do we have to learn this?"
Maybe to satisfy our love of learning and math.
Maybe because the best practices in learning and teaching will ultimately come from many sources.
Please share your sources with us on the contact page. We'd love to add them to this page
