"Not a Math Person?" Poppycock!

11/30/2015

NOT A MATH PERSON "small interventions 2 change attitudes about learning can have an outsized effect on performance" https://t.co/tSsxWDLmDg

— Algebra Cards (@AlgebraCards) December 1, 2015

not a math person? Poppycock!

When you look at the research in this article, it's easy to see that math scores are on the verge of an educational explosion. As we learn more about the brain and its capabilities, we are beginning to see just how impressively it can adapt.  There is a link to the research done with taxi drivers in London showing how portions of their brains grow when studying for a test and shrink after they retire.
     Then there are...
"...researchers like Carol Dweck, Camille Farrington and David Yeager have shown repeatedly that small interventions to change attitudes about learning can have an outsized effect on performance."
So a small adjustment to the attitudes we have toward math can result in big improvements achievement. And all teachers know that small successes build confidence. (It's one of the choices for electronic report card comments.)

AlgebraCARDS works to build confidence by helping learners to see and hear the concepts of algebra with clarity and in full color. Because we have made a podcast for every card, it just so happens that your brain will grow when you study with AlgebraCARDS. Designed to make math learning fun and engaging, most cards have a "Let's Play" review to show you how to win at the game of math.

Get your cards here! Listen to the podcasts here! Practice everyday, and you'll see your math scores take flight!

Math Anxiety - "Repost"

Are you helping your child with math homework?

"Researchers tracked more than 400, 1st and 2nd grade students whose parents provided different levels of help with their homework. They also assessed both parents' and kids' attitudes toward math at the beginning and end of the school year.

Students whose parents reported high math anxiety made significantly less progress in math over the course of a year, and they were more likely to become anxious themselves—but only if their anxious parents sweated through helping them with homework."

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. We are so grateful for all the support of our Indie-Gogo campaign.
With the nearly $8000 raised, we were able to provide AlgebraCARDS to three very deserving organizations.

The Toberman Neighborhood Center is "a non-profit community-based organization committed to assisting Harbor Area families and individuals by delivering life-changing services that encourage, inform, educate and empower them to live healthy and purposeful lives." Located in San Pedro, California, the center has programs for students and their families and they are very excited to start using AlgebraCARDS.

The Midnight Mission "offers a path to self-sufficiency to men, women and children who have lost everything." Farnaz has been working diligently to bring our clear and simple Algebra program to The Midnight Mission. They were the pioneers of the AlgebraCAST podcast set up and have been a joy to work with!

Burlington Middle School "is committed to providing each student with an education in which essential information and skills are learned, knowledge is explored, and ideas are critically analyzed and evaluated." We are excited to find schools from other parts of the country that might benefit from our program.

We are proud to be of service to learners of all ages. Thanks again to the supporters and administrators of the campaign.
