Listening While Reading

Supported Reading is a fancy term for "Follow along while so-and-so reads to you." It has been shown to help all types of students learn in all subject areas.

Since learning math is like learning another language and supported reading is another form of effective learning, wouldn't it be great to have a language lab for algebra? Math learners would get to Preview and Review content, and they would be "38% more likely to learn" when listening to someone read about algebra.  Teachers would benefit from this, too. If their students preview the material, teachers get a classroom full of active listeners.

In fact 38% more learning
gets done when students
follow along
as someone reads to them.

AlgebraCAST is a library of podcasts for every card we have designed. It's another way to learn algebra.  When students follow along with AlgebraCARDS, every podcast has a purpose. This multimedia format is a Supported Reading technique that also gives learners control of the reader, a very important static image, and their own personal listening lab.

We are proud to be at Staples today!

Staples in Torrance gave us a table to promote AlgebraCARDS.

AlgebraCARDS is a resource for students to practice the 8 Principles of Mathematics, making steps clear and simple to understand by using a visual guidance system.  In the classroom, with collaboration at its core purpose, this resource lends itself to social play, which teaches us how to share and take turns, how to communicate, and how to behave in groups or on teams.  Testing and discussing ideas with others can enhance individual creative abilities and provide more options for perseverance when solving problems.

We can't wait to see how AlgebraCARDS make learning algebra fun for everyone.

The Reading Brain in the Digital Age: Why Paper Still Beats Screens

Something to think about from Scientific American.

"...research suggests that even so-called digital natives are more likely to recall the gist of a story when they read it on paper..."

One of the reasons we designed Algebra Cards as a static text rather than a digital app is that technology, for now, is moving faster than human evolution. Most would agree that there are no short cuts for learning and that practice makes perfect. So, we made flash cards that make mastering algebra fun. Tell us how you enjoy your Algebra Cards!
